The Three Ways the Exam Ends

⏱️ The screen goes dark. Was it good news, bad news, or did you just run out of time? There are exactly three ways the NCLEX ends, and knowing them stops the spiral before it starts.

💡 Idea clave

Answer at least the minimum number of items before time runs out. After that, only your final ability estimate matters.

Rule one, the 95% CONFIDENCE RULE: once you have answered the minimum number of items, the exam stops as soon as the computer is 95% sure you are clearly above or clearly below the passing standard. This is how most exams end. Rule two, the MAXIMUM-LENGTH rule: if your ability stays close to the line, you keep going to 150 items, and the final ability estimate decides. Rule three, the RUN-OUT-OF-TIME rule: if time expires before you reach the minimum number of items, you fail. If you have passed the minimum, your final estimate decides.

🐢 A candidate spends four minutes agonizing over each item, hits the five-hour wall at question 70, and fails on the run-out-of-time rule despite knowing the material. Pace yourself: at 150 items you need to average about two minutes per question with breaks included. Mark a mental pace check every 25 questions.

📌 Para recordar

  • La confianza del 95% detiene la mayoría de los exámenes, temprano o tarde, para aprobar o reprobar95% confidence stops most exams, early or late, pass or fail
  • Cerca de la línea, llegas a 150 y decide la estimación finalNear the line, you go to 150 and the final estimate decides
  • Quedarte sin tiempo antes del mínimo es reprobar automáticamente, así que controla tu ritmoRunning out of time before the minimum is an automatic fail, so pace yourself

✅ Ponte a prueba

Un candidato llega al máximo de 150 ítems. ¿Cómo se decide si aprueba o reprueba?A candidate reaches the maximum of 150 items. How is pass or fail decided?
  1. Si la última pregunta se respondió correctamenteWhether the last question was answered correctly
  2. La estimación final de habilidad frente al estándar de aprobaciónThe final ability estimate against the passing standard
  3. Si se respondió correctamente más de la mitad de todas las 150 preguntasWhether more than half of all 150 questions were answered correctly

At maximum length, the computer uses the final ability estimate. At or above the standard passes; below it fails. The last item alone does not decide.

Why does pacing matter even though the exam is not about speed?
  1. No puedes tomar descansos si vas atrasado con el ritmoYou cannot take breaks if you are behind pace
  3. La computadora penaliza cualquier ítem que tardes más de 90 segundos en responderThe computer penalizes any item that takes longer than 90 seconds to answer
  4. Quedarte sin tiempo antes del mínimo de ítems es reprobarRunning out of time before the minimum items is a fail

Time only hurts you one way: if it expires before you have answered the minimum. Keep moving so that can never happen.
