Test Day Logistics Nobody Teaches You
🪪 People have been turned away from the test center over a name that did not match their ID. Others burned their whole break allowance before question 40. The logistics are boring, which is exactly why they trip people.
Match your ID to your ATT, schedule before the ATT expires, and remember the clock never stops, even on breaks.
Your AUTHORIZATION TO TEST (ATT) arrives by email after your nursing regulatory body makes you eligible. It has an expiration set by that body (commonly about 90 days) and cannot be extended, so schedule promptly. Bring one valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID with a signature; the first and last names must match your ATT exactly, or you must bring an original marriage license, divorce decree or court name-change document. Arrive at least 30 minutes early. You get a palm vein scan, a locker, and nothing goes into the room with you. Optional breaks are offered after about two hours and again after three and a half hours, and the clock keeps running during breaks. If you do not pass, you receive a Candidate Performance Report showing how you did in each content area, and you may retest after at least 45 test-free days, up to eight times a year, subject to your jurisdiction's rules.
📅 A graduate gets her ATT in June, waits for 'the perfect week', and watches it expire in September. New application, new fee, new wait, while her classmates are already working. Book the earliest date that fits a real study plan, then treat it as fixed.
ATT expiration is firm; schedule as soon as you get it
Name on the ID must match the ATT; bring one valid government photo ID
Breaks are optional and the five-hour clock keeps running through them
A candidate's driver's license shows her maiden name, her ATT shows her married name, and she has no name-change documents with her. What will happen at check-in?
She can test but her results are held
The proctor will update the ATT on the spot
She will be turned away; the names must match
She will be allowed to test after explaining
The first and last names on the ID must match the ATT exactly. Without an original marriage license, divorce decree or court name-change document she is turned away and must reregister and pay the fee again.
After a failed attempt, what is the minimum waiting period before retesting?
90 days
45 test-free days
One year
No waiting period
NCSBN policy requires at least 45 test-free days between attempts, with a maximum of eight attempts per year, though some jurisdictions allow fewer.
What happens to the exam clock during an optional break?
It pauses automatically
It keeps running
It restarts from zero when you return
Breaks add time to the exam
The five-hour limit includes breaks. Take them when needed, but know they cost time.
