Maslow's Pyramid, Nurse Edition

🔺 A client is crying about a divorce. Another has not voided in 10 hours after surgery. Your heart says the crying one. The exam says the bladder. Maslow explains why, and he is right.

Physiological, then safety, then psychosocial. Feelings matter, but on the exam the body and safety come first.

When the ABCs do not separate the options, use MASLOW'S HIERARCHY. Physiological needs come first: oxygen, fluids, nutrition, elimination, temperature, rest, pain. Then SAFETY and security: fall risk, infection, medication errors, a confused client climbing out of bed. Then LOVE and belonging, then ESTEEM, then SELF-ACTUALIZATION. On the exam a psychosocial need almost never outranks a physiological or safety need. The trap is sympathy: the emotional option feels more human, but the client who has not voided after surgery may be developing urinary retention, and the client in pain cannot learn or cope anyway.

🚽 A nurse chooses to sit with the tearful client. Meanwhile the post-op client's bladder reaches 700 mL, stretches, and later will not empty well for days. The sympathetic choice caused physical harm. Address the bladder (assess, scan, catheterize per order), then come back and sit down for the conversation, which you can now give your full attention.

Physiological needs first: air, fluids, food, elimination, pain
Safety second: falls, infection, confusion, errors
Psychosocial needs rarely win a priority question

Maslow के अनुसार किस मरीज़ की ज़रूरत को प्राथमिकता मिलती है?Which client need takes priority according to Maslow?
A client who has not voided in 9 hours after surgery
A client who wants to call family
A client who wants to discuss fears about going home
A client who feels embarrassed about needing help bathing

Elimination is a physiological need. Post-op retention can injure the bladder; the emotional needs come next.

किसकी ज़रूरत priority है?A confused client is attempting to climb over the side rails. A second client is asking for a snack. Which need is the priority?
The confused client; safety outranks a non-urgent want
The snack, because nutrition is a physiological need and comes first
Both equally
Neither; call the provider first and let the provider decide

A request for a snack is not an acute physiological deficit, while the climbing client is an immediate safety risk. Safety wins here.
